DAY 1 & 2 are in the books! Heading north…hopefully to Sitka, Alaska. We love the water and traveling on Blue Heron together is such a tremendous blessing!
After fueling, a shake down journey to Cypress Island, and a few extra days in Bellingham loving our kids, we left Squalicum Harbor at 1400 on June 12th. We traveled 31.5nm to Prevost Harbor, Stuart Island in near perfect conditions and dropped the hook (anchor) for the first time this year. The spot we picked was good, but had the potential of being a bit too close to some rocks when the tide dropped to -2.5 feet on Saturday morning. We knew we would be up early enough to move if we felt uncomfortable.

Well, morning came and we decide to be “safe” rather than “sorry.” Believe me when I say “that is ALWAYS the best decision.” We had a few choices. (1) Pull up our anchor and drop it in a better spot in Prevost Harbor. (2) Pull up our anchor and head across the border to Canada. (3) Pull up our anchor and head over to Reid Harbor, which is another anchorage on Stuart Island. We weighed the anchor at 0740 and went with option #3. The journey over to Reid from Prevost was only 4.6nm and took our “slow boat” about 50 minutes to get there. Anchored in the middle of the harbor there would be no danger of rocks at low tide.
Took the dinghy to the WA State Park dock and had a nice morning walk on the Prevost Loop. We were able to get some photos of the rocks that posed potential danger at our Friday night spot.

Don grilled carne asada for lunch, which we bring along from La Gloria Market in Bellingham. AMAZING! After lunch was the mandatory nap and then some sanding and pre-varnishing work which will be a common activity this summer. Blue Heron has a lot of bright work and it is desperate need of refinishing.

Two great days. Tomorrow the plan is to cross the border. We will use the NEXUS check in at Canoe Cove and then head to Brentwood Bay Marina and visit with some lovely new friends we met playing pickleball this winter in Huatulco, Mexico.
